Diet for Gout Sufferers

The highlight of the diet for gout sufferers is basically the consumption of foods that are low in purines.  Identifying and avoiding foods high in purines are important factors in the diet for people who suffer from gout.  So what then are these foods high in purines?  These include red meats, meat extracts, poultry, legumes, gravy, yeast, anchovies, sardines, and herrings to name a few.  Alcoholic drinks should be avoided as well.  The diet for gout sufferers should have minimal purine intake so include low fat dairy products, foods with high vitamin C content, green-leafy vegetables such as celery, cabbage, lettuce, etc.  Foods high in carbohydrates like rice, cereals, whole grains and pasta are included.   Soy and lean meats are allowed and other foods with no more than 30 % of calories in fat.  Fruits and fruit juices are recommended also.  Eating cherries and other red-blue berries can help reduce the levels of uric acid in the body.  Other foods that are also good in preventing gout are tofu, bananas and pineapple juice.   Drinking at least 8 glasses of water daily is an essential element of the diet for individuals with gout, the water will help flush out the uric acid in the body and eliminate the crystals that have built up in the joints.

It may be hard to follow the diet for gout sufferers because most of our favorite foods are off the diet plan.  The junk foods and comfort foods we have grown to love are usually the ones with high purine content.  However, some dietary changes and forgoes are need to be done in order to prevent the occurrence and experience of painful gout attacks.  This dietary modification would be very helpful for better management and treatment for gout sufferers.
